Would You Like to Learn More About Taxi Industry Training?

Working as a taxi driver in Finland requires a taxi driver’s licence issued by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom. To obtain the licence, you must meet the following basic requirements:

You have held a valid Category B driving licence for at least one year (issued in Finland or another EU/EEA country).
You meet the medical fitness requirements for professional driving (Group 2 medical certificate).
You complete the statutory taxi driver training and pass the official examination at Ajovarma.
The background check carried out by the authorities (criminal record and register of fines) must support the granting of the licence.

Once you have completed the training and passed the examination, and obtained the required medical certificate, you can submit your taxi driver’s licence application to Ajovarma. Traficom will then send the completed licence card to your home address.

You cannot apply for the licence without completing taxi driver training. Under legislation taking effect on 1 November 2026, new drivers must complete the mandatory 21-hour Taxi Driver Basic Training before they can take the official examination and obtain a taxi driver’s licence. Taksinkuljettajankoulutus.fi provides Traficom-approved Taxi Driver Basic Training online.

The training ensures that every driver has sufficient knowledge and skills in passenger safety, customer service, and relevant legislation before starting work in the taxi industry.

You can complete the Taxi Driver Basic Training through a Traficom-approved training provider.

Taksinkuljettajankoulutus.fi provides all training courses entirely through modern online instruction. This allows you to complete the training flexibly from anywhere in Finland using your own computer or phone. There is no need to travel to a training location.

The Taxi Driver Basic Training consists of 21 training hours and is completed over three training days (7 hours per day). This means the training can be completed in just a few days.

Once you have successfully completed the training, we will register your completion in the official system within a few working days. After that, you can book your examination and submit your taxi driver’s licence application.

Steps for Obtaining a New Taxi Driver’s Licence, in Order:

Check the basic requirements: You must have held a valid Category B driving licence for at least one year and have a medical certificate confirming that you meet the medical fitness requirements for professional driving.
Complete the Taxi Driver Basic Training: Take part in the official 21-hour training course. Read more about our online training here.
Pass the Ajovarma Exam: Once your training completion has been reported to Traficom, book an appointment and pass the taxi driver examination at an Ajovarma service point.
Apply for the Taxi Driver’s Licence: Submit your application to Ajovarma/Traficom. The authorities will then carry out the required background checks and send the licence to you by post.

Taksinkuljettajankoulutus.fi provides taxi driver training online, allowing you to participate from anywhere in Finland.

Starting a taxi business and obtaining a taxi transport licence requires completing the official process:

Complete the Taxi Entrepreneur Course: Take part in the Traficom-approved 21-hour online training, where you will learn about taxi business finances, legislation, and employer responsibilities.
Take the Entrepreneur Exam: After completing the training, pass the statutory entrepreneur exam, which is held as an in-person examination.
Establish a Company: Register a sole proprietorship or limited company with the Finnish Trade Register.
Apply for a Taxi Transport Licence: Submit your licence application to Traficom after passing the entrepreneur exam.
Start Your Business Operations: Once you receive a positive licence decision and your vehicle has been registered for taxi transport, you can begin operating.

Driving Kela-reimbursed taxi rides and municipal social and healthcare (Sote) transport services requires special qualifications:

Obtain a Taxi Driver’s Licence: You must have a valid taxi driver’s licence.
Complete Driver training for special passenger groups: Complete the Traficom-approved training. If your taxi driver’s licence was issued after 1 July 2018, the training takes 21 hours (14 h of online theory + 7 h of in-person practical training). If your licence was issued before 1 July 2018, only the 7-hour practical component is required.
Registration: After completing the training, your completion will be reported to Traficom’s professional qualifications register (no separate exam is required).
Start Driving Kela Transport Services: Once the qualification appears in the register, you can apply to provide Kela and Sote transport services through dispatch companies.

The taxi driver’s licence is valid for 5 years at a time (2 years for drivers aged 68 or over), and it can be renewed as follows:

Check the Validity: Start the renewal process well before your current licence expires.
Complete the Refresher Training: Take part in the statutory 7-hour refresher training, which can be completed entirely online in one day.
Update the Register: We will report the successfully completed training directly to Traficom’s professional qualifications register.
Submit the Renewal Application: Apply to Traficom to renew your licence (with an updated medical certificate if required).
