Driver training for special passenger groups – Qualify to Drive Kela Taxis

Would you like to expand your work opportunities as a taxi driver? Driver training for special passenger groups is supplementary training required under the Act on Transport Services and is mandatory for drivers providing Kela-reimbursed taxi rides, social and healthcare transport services, and school transport services.

Our training is approved by Traficom and qualifies you to provide transport services for special passenger groups.

Contents of the Driver training for special passenger groups

The Driver training for special passenger groups includes a theory component and a practical training day.

If your taxi driver’s licence was issued before 1 July 2018, you may complete only the practical training day.
If your taxi driver’s licence was issued after 1 July 2018, you must complete both the theory component and the practical training day.

Complete Training Package (21 hours)

Price: 299 € + VAT.

In addition, we charge Traficom’s registration fee 21 € (VAT 0 %)

Intended for: Drivers whose taxi driver’s licence was issued after 1 July 2018.

Duration: 14 hours of online theory + 7 hours of in-person practical training

Theory component: The 14-hour theory component is conveniently completed online over two days and can be attended from anywhere in Finland.

Practical training day: Held as an in-person training day, primarily at Akkad’s premises in Helsinki. We practise assisting customers, securing wheelchairs, and using safety equipment correctly. (For larger groups, the practical training can also be arranged in other locations by agreement.)

Language: The language of instruction is Finnish. Support is also available in English and Easy Finnish.

Payment methods: You can pay for the training directly through our online store using online banking, debit or credit card, MobilePay, Google Pay, Apple Pay or Klarna. Business customers can also pay by invoice.

Practical Training Day Only (7 Hours)

Price: 108 € + VAT.

In addition, we charge Traficom’s registration fee 21 € (alv 0 %)

Intended for: Drivers whose taxi driver’s licence was issued before 1 July 2018.

Duration: 7 hours of in-person practical training

Practical training day: Held as an in-person training day, primarily at Akkad’s premises in Helsinki. We practise assisting customers, securing wheelchairs, and using safety equipment correctly. (For larger groups, the practical training can also be arranged in other locations by agreement.)

Language: The language of instruction is Finnish. Support is also available in English and Easy Finnish.

You must complete Driver training for special passenger groups if you want to provide Kela-reimbursed transport services (so-called Kela taxis), municipal social and healthcare (Sote) transport services, or school and daycare transport. This additional training can also improve your employment opportunities.

The training focuses on assisting customers with mobility or sensory impairments, accessibility, and safe customer assistance. The training consists of a 14-hour online theory component and a 7-hour in-person practical training session in Helsinki (for larger groups, the practical training can also be arranged in other cities), where you will practise using mobility aids and safety equipment. If your taxi driver’s licence was issued before 1 July 2018, you only need to complete the 7-hour practical training day.

There is no separate exam after the training. Successful attendance and participation in the practical exercises are sufficient, after which we will report your completed training to Traficom.

Completing the training gives you access to Kela-reimbursed and municipal transport assignments, where demand is steady and mainly focused on weekdays. This can provide more regular working hours. You will also gain practical confidence and professional skills for safely assisting all types of passengers.

The practical training is primarily held at our Helsinki location. You will receive the address and more detailed information by email after registering for the training.

Practical training can also be arranged in other locations, depending on the number and location of participants. However, this must be agreed separately in advance.

Driver training for special passenger groups can be completed partly online. The theory component (21 h) is delivered online, while the practical component (7 h) is always completed as in-person training.

The duration of the training depends on when your taxi driver’s licence was issued. If your licence was issued after 1 July 2018, you must complete the full training programme (theory and practical training), which takes 21 hours in total, or three training days.

If your licence was issued before 1 July 2018 and you have renewed it when required, the training takes a total of 7 hours, or one training day.

Yes. A certificate is issued upon successful completion of the training, and the completed training is reported to Traficom.

Yes. To drive a Kela taxi, Driver training for special passenger groups must be completed.

You can start driving once the information has been updated in Traficom’s system. This usually takes a couple of days, and the status can be checked directly through Traficom’s online service.
